We hope to see you here again soon - Randy Holmes.
UK Taekwondo: A Korean martial art that was developed during the nineteen forties, Taekwondo has grown considerably in popularity since then. If you'd like to bolster your self-respect, build your confidence, develop your body and mind and learn to defend yourself better, Taekwondo might be just the pastime for you.
As a result of its rather more physical aspects, Taekwondo is possibly more suited to the younger generation in UK and is especially suited to children as it's fantastic for developing self-discipline and respect for other people. Older adults might find it a bit too demanding unless they are especially active and fit. Even so, those folks who persue Taekwondo in UK at a young age will find that they can easily continue with it into older adulthood. The less agile of you might consider something softer like Tai Chi.
The name Taekwondo was only coined in the 1950's, although the martial art started life in Korea in 1945. A group of Korean martial artists in Seoul established some new schools called "kwans", mixing various martial arts techniques. Taekwondo, which it eventually became known as, mostly involves kicking manoeuvres, in particular rapid kicking styles, spinning/jumping kicks and head kicks. Now UK Taekwondo classes observe this tradition.
With over 60 million people taking part in Taekwondo classes all over the world, this has certainly become a popular activity, and if you become really expert at this sport you might even one day be eligible for the Olympic Games, of which it has been a part since the Sydney Games in the year 2000.
