Taekwondo Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale Taekwondo (NP23): If you are looking for ways to bolster your self-respect, boost your confidence, learn some useful self-defence techniques and strengthen your mind and body, you might consider taking up a sport like Taekwondo. This more modern of the martial arts was developed in Korea just after World War 2.
Because Taekwondo has fairly high physical requirements, it's possibly more suited to the younger people of Ebbw Vale. That isn't to say that older people can't take part in this popular activity, but simply that there may be other martial arts which are more suited to the less agile among us. Tai Chi would be a perfect illustration.
With its origins in 1940's Korea, Taekwondo is certainly one of the more recently introduced of the martial arts and consists of primarily high-kicking movements such as rapid kicking strategies, turning/jumping kicks and head kicks. It started when schools called "kwans" were established by a group of Korean martial artists in Seoul, South Korea.
Taekwondo has grown to become extremely popular in Ebbw Vale and all around the world, with more than sixty million participants worldwide. Joining a local Ebbw Vale Taekwondo class or club is an excellent way to get involved with this sport which has even been a feature of the Olympic Games ever since the Sydney Games in 2000. Although you might not aspire to Olympic competition, there's certainly no reason why you cannot become an expert at this exciting martial art and have a bit of fun in the process.
Although there is a great deal to be gained by mastering Taekwondo, it is the self-defence aspect that most Ebbw Vale people are interested in. This is not difficult to believe when you take into account the elevated levels of violence experienced in city centres day after day. In fact one of the primary principles of Taekwondo is learning to defend yourself whilst exercising self-restraint and a respect for others.
These self-defence techniques may in due course come in handy in your day to day life, although it's more likely you'll only be testing them within a controlled class environment. However it is a wonderful feeling knowing the fact that you will always be able to successfully defend yourself if you need to.
Your First Lesson
If you have just booked your very first Taekwondo class, you will be wondering what to expect. The following will give you an example, but this will vary depending on which Ebbw Vale school you attend. A fifteen to twenty minute warm up, some technical training involving learning some stances, kicks, blocks and hand attacks, some work on forms or patterns, a few ideas on sparring including timing, movement and the targeting of attacks, and lastly a warm down to relax and stretch tired muscles.
The regulating body for Taekwondo in the UK is British Taekwondo and anyone wishing to join a Taekwondo class in Ebbw Vale has to also become a member of British Taekwondo. You can find lots of information on referees and coaching, news, clubs and members, beginning a new club, coaching courses, safeguarding and equality, events, safe practices, first aid, and more, by going to the official British Taekwondo website.
Taekwondo Belts (Promotion)
In Taekwondo there's not really any kind of standardisation in regards to ranking and belts. It is all subject to which style you are considering, since there are such a lot of Taekwondo styles. They are however, typically split into a couple of groupings "junior (colour) belts and "senior" (black) belts. The colour/junior ranks range from white to red, with from eight to twelve grades, whilst the senior/black belts normally have 9 levels.
A regular Taekwondo competition incorporates sparring, breaking and patterns, as far as the Olympics is concerned only sparring is involved. That said there are also some special events in specific tournaments such as self-defence and team demonstrations. WT competitions are strictly soft-contact events, while International Taekwon-Do Federation competitions permit some hand attacks to be aimed at the head. There are in addition some multi-discipline contests.
So, what do you want from doing Taekwondo? Well, that is a good question, and the answer to that will vary for different people. The majority of participants will purely wish to gain more confidence, improve their levels of fitness and meet new people. We're certainly not all going to reach the dizzy heights of Jade Jones or Lutalo Muhammad, although perhaps you will, you never know? 👊
