Walkden Taekwondo (M28): Originally developed in Korea during the 1940's and 50's, Taekwondo is a fast paced combatative sport that has become ever more popular over the last 30 years or so. For those of you who wish to enhance your self-esteem, learn a bit of self-defence, strengthen your mind and body and build your confidence, Taekwondo could be the ideal pastime or fitness activity.
While not intending to be in any way ageist, Taekwondo can be rather physical and is generally more suited to younger people in Walkden, it is especially good for children who will learn to be self-disciplined and respecting of others. It could prove too taxing for some older adults, but shouldn't be a problem for those who are already fit and active. Quite a few of the older adults who do Taekwondo in Walkden, started when they were younger. The less agile of you might find that Tai Chi which is a bit softer is more suitable.
With its beginnings in 1940's Korea, Taekwondo is certainly one of the more recently introduced of the martial arts and involves mainly high-kicking movements such as jumping/turning kicks, head kicks and rapid kicking techniques. It started when schools called "kwans" were set up by a group of Korean martial artists in Seoul, South Korea.
At present an Olympic sport, Taekwondo has over 60 million enthusiasts worldwide, and though you may not aspire to be an Olympic Games medalist, you can still sign up for a Taekwondo class or club to learn what will undoubtedly turn out to be a fascinating and worthwhile pastime.
A key element of Taekwondo is self-defence, and obviously this is one of the principal reasons that people in Walkden get involved in classes and take up the sport. There's been a disturbing increase in violent conduct in recent times and this is especially rampant in city and town centres around Greater Manchester and the country as a whole. The beauty of Taekwondo though, is that it also teaches self-discipline and respect for others, not such familiar attributes in Walkden nowadays.
With a bit of luck, outside your local Taekwondo club environment, you will never need to try out your newly learned skills to defend yourself.
Your First Class
If Taekwondo isn't an activity that you have ever had a go at previously, you'll doubtless be wondering what you should expect from your first class should you make your mind up to sign up. Different Taekwondo schools in the Walkden area have varying thoughts on this but in brief; you will take part in a fifteen to twenty minute warm-up, you'll do a certain amount of technical training, you will learn some patterns (forms), you are going to practice sparring methods and finally you'll warm-down to get your body back into a relaxed state once more.

Taekwondo Belts (Rank)
Since there are a number of types of Taekwondo there's never really been any standardized arrangement for assigning belts (grades). What exists however is relatively similar and consists of two belt groups "senior" and "junior" (black and colour), each of these groupings is divided into ranks, 8 to 12 colours in the case of juniors and 9 for the seniors.
In the UK Taekwondo has a sequence of ranks which are referred to as "Kup", these ranks go from 10th (lowest) to 1st (highest). If you're curious about the Taekwondo belt order, it is as follows, and is portrayed by a range of colours i.e. white, yellow, green, blue and red, with intermediate belts with stripes, namely white with a yellow stripe, yellow with a green stripe, green with a blue stripe, blue with a red stripe and red with a black stripe. Beginners of Taekwondo in Walkden will begin with the Tenth Kup (White Belt), and progress through the coloured belts until they earn the Red With Black Stripe Belt (First Kup)
Taekwondo trainees in Walkden become "black belt candidates" once they've successfully completed this process, and they'll then have to proceed through a further nine ranks (called Dans) if they wish to achieve the supreme distinction Taekwondo Black Belt. Therefore, Junior, Senior and Black Belts are the three principal classifications in the Taekwondo belt order. The Taekwondo Belts in the Junior group comprise; 10th (White), 9th (White With Yellow Stripe), 8th (Yellow), and 7th (Yellow With Green Stripe). The Taekwondo Belts in the Senior group are; 6th (Green), 5th (Green With Blue Stripe), 4th (Blue), 3rd ( Blue With Red Stripe), 2nd (Red), and 1st (Red With Black Stripe). The Taekwondo Belts in the Black group range from 1st to 9th Dan, a qualification process which takes a number of years.
The Eight Basic Taekwondo Kicks
Taekwondo is perhaps best known for its spectacular kicks, listed here are a handful of the standard kicks you will learn as a beginner: Push Kick (Meereo Chagi), Side Kick (Yeop Chagi), Roundhouse Kick (Dollyo Chagi), Crescent Kick (Bandal Chagi), Front Kick (Ap Chagi), Axe Kick (Naeryeo Chagi), Back Kick (Dwo Chagi), Whip or Hook Kick (Huryeo Chagi). Taekwondo Blocks: Taekwondo "blocks", that are used to defend against the different attacking moves, are known as Makgi. They're held in specific positions and engage the hand with different parts of the arm. Each and every "block" can be merged with a kick or punch to establish a counter-attack, and each "block" is suitable for a particular attack. The primary blocks used in Taekwondo include: Upper Block, Low Block, Nine Block, Knife Hand Block, Double Forearm Block, Palm Block, Single Forearm Block, Double Knife Hand Block and Rising Block.
Taekwondo tournaments and competitions are staged all over the world in all the diverse styles. There is generally not a whole lot of hard contact but sparring, breaking and patterns (forms). Olympic and World Taekwondo (WT) competitions comprise only sparring, in International Taekwon-Do Federation competitions specific hand attacks are allowed to the head. Various other organizations stage multi-discipline contests.
We can practically guarantee that if you take up Taekwondo you will gain self-confidence, improve your wellbeing and make new friends. If that is all that you take away from it, then that is amazing, you can call it a success! We're not all striving to be Jade Jones's or Lutalo Muhammad's, but those of you that are, still have to begin with the first step. Good luck on your quest! 👊
