Hersham Taekwondo (KT12): Created in the 1940's in Korea, Taekwondo is a martial art which has grown dramatically in popularity in recent times. Known as a way to learn some self-defence techniques, boost your confidence, strengthen your body and mind and bolster your self-respect, it's been embraced by a huge number of fitness enthusiasts internationally.

While people of every age group in Hersham can obviously participate in Taekwondo, it is particularly suited to the younger generation as it can be fairly demanding physically, children can especially benefit from its teachings of self-discipline and the respect of others. Older adults trying Taekwondo for the first time often find it too taxing, unless they have continually kept themselves active. People in Hersham who take up Taekwondo when they are young find it simple to continue when they become older. Tai Chi or something similarly less demanding might be more suited to the less nimble of you.
Taekwondo is one of the more recently developed of the martial arts, with its beginnings in Korea in 1945. Some new schools called "kwans", combining various martial arts techniques were established in Seoul by a group of Korean martial arts fanatics. Kicking manoeuvres, especially jumping/spinning kicks, fast kicking techniques and head-height kicks are the main emphasis of Taekwondo, as it eventually became known.Today Hersham Taekwondo classes follow this tradition.

With over 60 million practitioners worldwide and quite a few in Hersham, Taekwondo has become very popular. If you want to get involved in this activity, which is now an Olympic sport, joining a Taekwondo club or class in Hersham is a good place to start. While the chances of you getting to Olympic standard are pretty slim, there is no reason at all why you cannot master this thrilling martial art.
While there is much to be gained by doing Taekwondo, it is the self-defence aspect that most Hersham people are interested in. You should not be surprised by this, when you take into account the high incidence of violence seen in today's town and city centres. In fact one of the key principles of Taekwondo is learning to defend yourself whilst exercising self-restraint and a respect for others.
Whilst it will instill you with confidence being aware that you have such self-defence skills in your locker, the odds are you will never be required to test them outside the regulated environment of an organized Taekwondo class.

Taekwondo Belts (Promotion)
In the art of taekwondo there's not really any kind of uniformity in relation to grades and belts. It is all determined by which style you happen to be reviewing, since there are so many different Taekwondo styles. However, they're typically divided into two groupings "junior" or "colour" belts and "senior" or "black" belts. The colour/junior ranks consist of white to red, with from eight to twelve levels, whilst the black/senior belts typically have 9 grades.

Ranks (belts) in Taekwondo in the UK are depicted by what are called "Kup". The top rank is First Kup and the lowest rank is Tenth Kup. If you're interested in the Taekwondo belt order, it is as follows, and is portrayed by a range of different colours i.e. white, yellow, green, blue and red, with intermediate belts with stripes, specifically white with a yellow stripe, yellow with a green stripe, green with a blue stripe, blue with a red stripe and red with a black stripe. Beginner students of Taekwondo in Hersham will begin with the 10th Kup (White Belt), and proceed through the coloured belts until they earn the Red Belt With a Black Stripe (1st Kup).
Taekwondo students in Hersham are known as "black belt candidates" once they have successfully completed this process, and they will then need to proceed through yet another 9 ranks (or Dans) if they wish to achieve the consummate accolade of "Black Belt" in Taekwondo. Therefore, putting it simply, there are 3 main groupings in the Taekwondo belt order, namely Junior, Senior and Black Belt. The Junior group of Taekwondo Belts comprise; White (Tenth), White With a Yellow Stripe (Ninth), Yellow (Eighth), and Yellow With a Green Stripe (Seventh). The Senior group of Taekwondo Belts are; Green (Sixth), Green With a Blue Stripe (Fifth), Blue (Fourth), Blue With a Red Stripe (Third), Red (Second), and Red With a Black Stripe (First). The Black group of Taekwondo Belts comprise First to Ninth Dan rankings, and will involve many years of dedicated training.
